A class of nonlocal truncations in Quantum Einstein Gravity and its renormalization group behavior

چکیده
Motivated by the conjecture that the cosmological constant problem could be solved by strong quantum effects in the infrared we use the exact flow equation of Quantum Einstein Gravity to determine the renormalization group behavior of a class of nonlocal effective actions. They consist of the Einstein-Hilbert term and a general nonlinear function Fk(V ) of the Euclidean space-time volume V. A partial differential equation governing its dependence on the scale k is derived and its fixed point is analyzed. For the more restrictive truncation of theory space where Fk(V ) is of the form V+V lnV , V+V 2, and V+ √ V , respectively, the renormalization group equations for the running couplings are solved numerically. The results are used in order to determine the k-dependent curvature of the S4-type Euclidean space-times which are solutions to the effective Einstein equations, i.e. stationary points of the scale dependent effective action. For the V+V lnV -invariant (discussed earlier by Taylor and Veneziano) we find that the renormalization group running enormously suppresses the value of the renormalized curvature which results from Planck-size bare parameters specified at the Planck scale. Hence one can obtain very large, almost flat universes without fine-tuning the cosmological constant.

متن کاملOn the renormalization group flow of f(R)-gravity
We use the functional renormalization group equation for quantum gravity to construct a nonperturbative flow equation for modified gravity theories of the form S = ∫ ddx √ gf(R). Based on this equation we show that certain gravitational interactions monomials can be consistently decoupled from the renormalization group (RG) flow and reproduce recent results on the asymptotic safety conjecture. ...
متن کاملAsymptotic Safety, and Quantum Einstein Gravity∗
These lecture notes provide a pedagogical introduction to a specific continuum implementation of the Wilsonian renormalization group, the effective average action. Its general properties and, in particular, its functional renormalization group equation are explained in a simple scalar setting. The approach is then applied to Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG). The possibility of constructing a fund...
متن کاملBimetric Truncations for Quantum Einstein Gravity and Asymptotic Safety
In the average action approach to the quantization of gravity the fundamental requirement of “background independence” is met by actually introducing a background metric but leaving it completely arbitrary. The associated Wilsonian renormalization group defines a coarse graining flow on a theory space of functionals which, besides the dynamical metric, depend explicitly on the background metric...

The Asymptotic Safety scenario predicts that the deep ultraviolet of Quantum Einstein Gravity is governed by a nontrivial renormalization group fixed point. Analyzing its implications for cosmology using renormalization group improved Einstein equations, we find that it can give rise to a phase of inflationary expansion in the early Universe. Inflation is a pure quantum effect here and requires...
